Did I mention this was a sand island?

“Our memories of the ocean will linger on,
long after our footprints in the sand are gone.”
Anonymous

A sunny day on Fraser Island should be spent on the sand, but where?  The dumb blonde consensus was to take the boogie boards to Lake Wabby.
"The lake; speak silence with thy glimmering eyes,
And wash the dusk with silver."
William Blake

Lake Wabby is a fresh water Barrage Lake, this is where a natural spring is blocked by a sand dune and the water backs up.  Eventually it will disappear under the sand.
We stopped to check on directions at the tourist information board next to the cutting for the road inland.  I was grateful for all the advice it had to offer.
“Australia is an outdoor country.
People only go inside to use the toilet.
And that's only a recent development.”
Barry Humphries

I suppose this image was an attempt to transcend the language barrier but with the amount of pasta my kids eat I resonated with the guy in yellow, forever waiting around tapping his foot.
“To see a world in a grain of sand and heaven in a wild flower Hold infinity in the palms of your hand and eternity in an hour.”
 William Blake

The walk down from the lookout promised to be short, but of course I was asked "are we there yet" a couple minutes into the walk.  In return for their blind belief in my all-knowing navigational skills, I tried to make the journey more interesting by contemplating what animal lived in the small snake size holes we kept stepping over.
  “It isn't the mountain ahead that wears you out;
it's the grain of sand in your shoe.”
 Rodan of Alexandria
What is it about a walk into the unknown in a solitary place that makes you scream out Tarzan noises?  My sincere "Pardon" to the French family who we startled with our Lord of the Jungle impressions.
“In every outthrust headland, in every curving beach,
in every grain of sand there is the story of the earth.”
 Rachel Carson

It was however well worth the stomp through the undergrowth.  Lake Wabby was just as I remembered it, beautiful, untouched and a whole mess of fun.

“Footprints on the sands of time are not made by sitting down.”
 Proverb

“I hear lake water lapping with low sounds by the shore. . . .
I hear it in the deep heart's core.”
William Butler Yeats

The solitude seemed to make the screams of delight louder and the laughter echo further across the sand dunes and out over the green waters of the lake.
“They dined on mince, and slices of quince,
Which they ate with a runcible spoon;
And hand in hand, on the edge of the sand,
They danced by the light of the moon”
Edward Lear
“Write injuries in sand, kindnesses in marble”
 French Proverb

This was all looking like too much fun for a dumb blonde to resist.  Not one to sit on the side lines I decided that of course "Mom knows what she's doing".

“We all leave footprints in the sand, the question is,
will we be a big heal, or a great soul.

Of course I ended up "arse over tit", speaking of which I wanted to share my breast implant with the world.
Dumb blonde breast implant!

“Time is like a handful of sand- the tighter you grasp it, the faster it runs through your fingers”

I knew this day would be remembered by all of us long into the future.  A collection of these moments easily balance out all the schlep encountered when travelling.  The next time I'm stuck in a an airport security queue I'm going to close my eyes and remember this.
“The more sand that has escaped from the hourglass of our life, the clearer we should see through it.”
 Niccolo Machiavelli

Not wanting to forget the one blonde who hasn't shot down the sand gauntlet yet.  "Pah - easy" says Greg.

You throw the sand against the wind
And the wind blows it back again.”
William Blake

On vacations: We hit the sunny beaches where we occupy ourselves keeping the sun off our skin, the saltwater off our bodies, and the sand out of our belongings.
